SENDIASS news
East Riding of Yorkshire Council currently provides a Special Educational Needs and/or Disability Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) to parents/carers, young people and children through two services; the East Riding SENDIASS Team for parents/carers and children, and KIDS which offers advocacy for young people aged 16-25 year olds.
A consultation was carried out in 2018 by the Children’s Commissioning & Quality Monitoring Team, in partnership with the Parent/Carer Forum and the Clinical Commissioning Group. There were a low number of responses, and we recognise there is therefore a need for further consultation work to be undertaken.
Due to both current contracts ending in March 2020, the Local Authority has taken the decision, as an interim measure and until the further consultation work can be undertaken, to merge the parents/carers and children services with the young people’s SENDIASS service to create one SENDIASS team. This will ensure the Local Authority complies with its statutory obligations outlined in the SEN Code of Practice 2015, and will allow the Children’s Commissioning & Quality Monitoring Team to carry out a full and extensive consultation. Planning work for this will begin in May 2020 once transition to the combined East Riding SENDIASS team has happened. This will then enable a service specification that is shaped by the users that access the service to be developed, with the intention of ensuring that all service users receive the best quality of service possible.
This statement has been produced today (21/01/2020) with East Riding Parent/Carer Forum to inform all service users that, as of 1 April 2020, there will be an interim SENDIASS service that will provide all support, advice and guidance for children and young people aged 0-25 and parents/carers. The current SENDIASS service for parents/carers and children will remain the same, and planning work is already underway for both KIDS and the SENDIASS team to ensure there is a smooth transition for any young person who is accessing the current KIDS service.
All current service users will be contacted about the change in service in due course via an individual letter.

Downright Special is working with the local councils, the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, the Department for Work and Pensions and local providers to look at post-16 opportunities for people with Down syndrome or other learning disabilities.
'Building a Brighter Future' aims to create the environment that allows people with learning disabilities to access meaningful work and activities that ensures they can continue to learn and develop throughout their lives as active members of the community.
Downright Special would like to hear about your experiences of supporting your child or young person in the transition through secondary education, to college and beyond by completing a short survey.
The survey is aimed at parents and carers of children and young people from age 11 to over 25 who have a learning disability.
