End of Term Fundraiser

The staff and students of Driffield School and Sixth Form joined forces to celebrate the end of the term with a fantastic fundraising event. Two staff teams competed in “Soccer Aid” on the AstroTurf, watched by hundreds of students. The game was billed as a clash between “West vs Rest”, with staff teams from the various buildings fielding teams to fight for bragging rights. The music department and Sixth Form students provided brass accompaniment throughout, starting the game with a rousing rendition of The National Anthem.

It was a closely fought game with the teams being evenly matched and supported raucously by the watching crowd. At half time the score stood at 1:1 after goals from Mr Havercroft, following an assist from Mr Flanagan, for “Rest” and a bundled finish from a corner from Mr Chapman for “West”. The tackles and banter continued to fly in the second half as Mr Duke showed that he had lost none of his mobility! “Rest” took a lead through a well taken goal, again from Mr Havercroft, with an assist from Mr Colley and looked on course to secure the win and bragging rights until a last minute equaliser from Mr Andrews, after a cross from Mr Chapman, levelled the game. There was no time remaining for a penalty shootout, so both teams will need to play in a rematch next term. There was time however for the students to form a spontaneous guard of honour for the players, with the cheers resounding particularly loudly for the fan’s Man of the Match, Mr Whitworth!

Mr Duke, Head of PE, said “Thank you to all the staff for taking part; and to the students who watched the match and made a 50p donation each – raising over £400!”.
