Driffield Year 10 v St Peters – York’s Cup Quarter Final

date: 2018-06-15

St. Peter’s won the toss and batted on a green wicket with a short leg side boundary. Driffield set a good field and a beautiful in swinging, full length ball confused the home opener and he was bowled first ball by Robb. The next pair batted sensibly and took the score to 70 and a mixture of full blooded boundaries and neat running kept the run rate high and they finished on 171/5 after 20 overs. A daunting total but a great outfield means this was just above par score.  Mention must once again go to Leighton who bowled four fantastic overs at the death picking up wickets and containing the attacking batsman.

Robb and Wilkes kept the opening bowlers at bay with wise shot selection and Wembley early running. Southgate (yes, son of that Southgate) proved difficult to get away but the two Driffield openers started to attack the spin bowling change and after Wilkes departed Robb reached his second fifty in successive innings but with the score on 79 he tried one single too many and was run out. Martindale continued the scoring with Needham and the pair took the total to 120/5 at the close of play.
